CONTENTS

I have created a contents page. It shows were things would go and shows a typical layout of a magazine contents page.
I didnt want to make it very crowded as it doesnt need to be, it just needs to look good and do its job which is to both attract and navigate the magazine reader to where they want to be.

FINAL PEICE

Here is a final copy of my college magazine front cover.
Firstly, under the title I inserted a sub-heading saying "Education that counts". This is because I began to think about the dennotations and connnotations of my masthead. "ETC" in itself stands for etcetra, but because I figured it was a boring title without any connotations I made it stand for something. It is also now more relevant to a college magazine and gives it more than one meaning.

I also changed the colours of my headlines to make them more visible on the page. The darkish purple that they were before made the front cover lack colour and made it look dull.
Using a brighter colour makes them both easier to read, and appeals more to it's audience as it looks more interesting.

I altered the positions of my headlines aswell so that the page didnt seem to purposely structured. I want it to look professional but because it is aimed at teenagers it needs to look interesting at the same time, but trying not to make it look as though I had put them in any old place.

I have included the college details at the bottom of the page, like all existing magazines do, and also for the use of the purchaser.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

I have imported my headlines. It is slowly developing but is coming along well. I needed to make the headlines different sizes to make my main story more distinct. I am pleased with how my magazine cover is developing but I am still not happy with the layout, Im not convinced it looks professional enough!

SCANNED DRAFTS

I created two drafts for my front cover on paper to show were things would go, and another for the contents mock up to show what headlines I would use and were things would go.

BAR CODE

There will be a bar code on my front magazine cover so that it can be scanned before being given to a student. There is no price on the product but allows the seller to see the amount they have sold and when they sold it.

STARTING OVER

To get my image to fit the full size of an A4 publisher page i had to re-make my magazine image and set it to the right page size on photoshop page settings. I found it hard to make a replica of what I had already created so my second copy is slightly different to how I imagined. I found that the replica was also a little better, i preffered what I did to my second copy because of the effect. The background on the image is much more clearer and I used a masthead that stands out a lot more than the original.

DEVELOPMENT

Here is my develpment. I have added a title, a barcode and also the wyke symbol. I have chosen to do a purple title so that it fits in with the wyke colour scheme.

STORIES

HPV vaccine- Teenage girls react to injection!

Students climb for college computers!

Swine flu hits Hull!

Personal interview with Dick Smith!

CONCLUSION OF DRAFT

I decided to use DRAFT2. This is because it has more detail and is more interesting to look at. If I am intended to attract a teenage audience I need to be sure it is appealing. It uses brighter colours then DRAFT1 and a more interesting image. The background is also more attractive and is more likely to grab a students attention because of this.

DRAFT2

Here is another version of my potential magazine. I used three different photos and emerged them into one using photoshop. I like this background a lot better then the background in DRAFT1 and so i think it is the one i am going to use.

DRAFT1

Here is a draft of what my magazine will look like, I put an effect on the background and made it fit in the background and made the image the main focus. I haven't decided on a title for my magazine yet but it will be in a big font and placed in the top left corner

REPRESENTATION

I researched images of college magazine front covers and i discovered that the image on the front needs to be a student. This student should look happy, willing to work and friendly. I will show this by taking an image of a student smiling, to show they are happy, holding either a folder or a book to show they're hard working and willing to work hard. By putting this image on the front it will give the message that college is a good place to be and is a friendly environment.

PRACTICE

This is a practice of what my magazine would have looked like but after reading the breif I found out that my image has to be a mid shot of a student. because of this iv decided to put the image of the building behind them and put the student photo infront.

MY IDEAS.

My magazine is going to be based on Wyke college, but concentrate on a certain subject. This subject will be Dance. I have decided that instead of using a plain background for my magazine i am going to take a photograph of the college building with students outside of it. I will then take a photograph of a student or my dance teacher in a mid shot and put it infront of the image of the building. The student/teacher will be in a dance position, but it will be close up. They will be smiling at the camera and I will manipulate the colours of the image. I will also make the background less bright than the image so that the picture stands out.

IMAGE USE and PRICE

From this image of a college magazine cover, i gained that you dont neccessarily need one deffinate image of a student in the middle. This tells me that because of who it will be aimed at it MUST be appealing and look interesting!
If it doesnt attract the audience it should it will totally lose it's purpose!
AFTER RESEARCHING COLLEGE MAGAZINE COVERS, I DISCOVERED THAT NONE OF THEM HAD A PRICE AND I THEREFORE DO NOT NEED TO PUT A PRICE ON THE ONE I WILL PRODUCE IN ORDER TO STICK TO THE TYPICAL COLLEGE MAGAZINE GUIDELINES.

COLOURS

I must make sure that i use colours that are both suitable for males and females. The colours i use will be a big contribution towards grabbing my intended audience's attention.
My magazine needs to stand out in comparison to others but should still look proffessional. In order to do this i need to really concentrate on who i am aiming my magazine at and really look into what they find attractive!
i think; being a teenager myself, that this should be an easy element to get right.

HEADLINES

This masthead is so recognisable that it can even be identified when it is partly covered. Although this isn't the type of magazine i am going to be producing, it is a good example of how mine should look.
It must be:
. big
. at the top
. bold
. in your face
. relevant
. proffessional
The headlines on this magazine are relevant to a normal magazine like "Vogue" were as I will be producing a college or school magazine and i should therefore take into consideration that headlines like "The right swimsuit for your body type" will not be relevant for my use.
I should use headlines such as " HPV Vaccine" or "Highest grades ever!" because they will be suitable for the type of magazine im going to make.

PLANNING

Order of planning:
. Brain Storm
. Draft one
produce a post
. Draft two
produce a post
. Compare it to research
produce a post
. Final Draft

colours, fonts and design.

like the magazine cover above, the colours on my magazine should be uniform. It shouldn't look random and unprofessional but look spontanious :)

Target Audience

i will aim my magazine at college students, therefore i need to look at what college students find appealing in a magazine. I need to look at colour, fonts, styles, sizes, and layout. i also need to consider both teachers and parents as they will be interested in what is happening in college and what the students are doing.
mostly, it would be aimed at older teenagers to adult as school children and younger teens wouldnt be interested. Because of this i should make my magazine look mature and sophisticated.
i also need to consider that both sex's are going to be reading the magazine, so therefore i should use colours that both male and female are going to find attractive.

What my contents page will include..

My contents page will include the following:

- a title at the top
- page numbers, in a list maybe
- name of pages
- the pages listed on the front in a different colour to others
- images
- logo
- website
contents pages usually have a uniform layout. The page number is usually on the left hand side with the page title beside it. There are numeral images on either side of the page giving the reader hints as to what each page contains.
It doesnt have to be colourful, but shouldn't contain so much text that it makes the reader flick straight past it.

Contents pages compared

In a college magazine, a contents page has the following:

- title (subheading)

- page number and page title

- maybe images?

- funky fonts

- doesnt look as professional as a normal magazine like Heat
