contents pages usually have a uniform layout. The page number is usually on the left hand side with the page title beside it. There are numeral images on either side of the page giving the reader hints as to what each page contains.
It doesnt have to be colourful, but shouldn't contain so much text that it makes the reader flick straight past it.
